Description
What is behaviour really telling us?
3-Hour Workshop | $75 per person | Perth | Take-Home Resources | Certificate of Attendance
What sits underneath what we see?
The student who refuses to start. The one who argues about everything. The student who shuts down, walks out, lashes out or seems determined to derail the lesson. It’s easy to focus on the behaviour because that’s the part we can see. But behaviour rarely tells us the whole story.
A student may be overwhelmed, anxious, dysregulated, frustrated, embarrassed, trying to avoid failure or responding to an unmet need that they don’t have the words or skills to explain.
This workshop looks at behaviour through a student lens, drawing on trauma-informed, person-centred and humanistic approaches to help us become more curious about what might be happening underneath the surface.
Moving from “What are they doing?” to “Why?”
Looking beyond behaviour doesn’t mean ignoring boundaries, removing expectations or accepting unsafe behaviour. It means recognising that how we understand a behaviour influences how we respond to it.
We’ll explore how unmet needs, relationships, environment and a student’s individual circumstances can influence what we see in the classroom, and how changing our response can sometimes change what happens next.
Responding without becoming the therapist
Educators play an incredibly important role in a young person’s life, but there are boundaries to that role.
We’ll look at ways to respond with empathy and curiosity while maintaining clear expectations, appropriate professional boundaries and a supportive learning environment. You’ll leave with a different lens for interpreting behaviour, and more options for what to do when the usual response simply isn’t working.
Who is it for?
Teachers, Education Assistants, Learning Support, Student Services, Wellbeing Teams, Parents, Carers and Tutors, and anyone working with a child or young person whose behaviour can be difficult to understand.
