Description
Look beyond attendance.
3-Hour Workshop | $75 per person | Perth | Take-Home Resources | Certificate of Attendance
When getting through the school gate feels impossible
For some students, school attendance becomes a daily battle. They may complain of feeling sick, become distressed the night before, refuse to get out of the car, attend only certain lessons or stop coming altogether.
From the outside it can look like a student simply won’t attend. For many young people, the reality is much closer to: right now, I can’t.
What is school asking of this student?
We’ll look beyond the attendance percentage and explore the factors that can sit underneath persistent school avoidance, including anxiety, neurodivergence, sensory overwhelm, social difficulties, learning demands, burnout and previous negative experiences.
The aim is not to find one universal cause. It’s to understand what makes attendance feel unsafe or unmanageable for this particular student.
Build a pathway back, not another battle
Pressure alone rarely resolves entrenched school avoidance. We’ll explore collaborative, gradual and student-centred approaches that focus on safety, connection and achievable steps.
You’ll leave with a better framework for understanding school refusal/school can’t and practical ideas for working with students, families and school teams toward meaningful re-engagement.
